The Christmas season is a time of hope, connection, and renewal. We have an opportunity to extend our warmth and compassion to those who need it most—23 Armenian hostages in Baku. Through letters and postcards, we can remind them they are not forgotten and that their Armenian family worldwide is thinking of them.

What to write to someone you never met?

Our hostages are in isolation, any encouraging message makes them feel they are not forgotten and will lift their spirits. Share a brief story, a piece of good news, or a fond memory, and write about everyday life and positive experiences, such as cultural events you visited, books you read, films you watched, and museums you visited. You can share a favorite Armenian family tradition, or simply offer encouraging words like “I lit a candle for you” or “Your strength inspires us all.” By focusing on these topics, you provide comfort and a sense of connection without touching on sensitive matters.

Please note that your messages are likely to be censored. So, to improve the chances of them reaching the hostages, please refrain from discussing the legal details of their situation or mentioning other individuals without their consent. Political messages, slogans, or criticism of officials should also be avoided.

How to send your letter?

1. Email your letter to Azerbaijan’s Ombudsman at ombudsman@ombudsman.az. Please mention the name of the hostage the email is addressed.

2. Send by Post:

• Attach a completed form as the first page of your letter (https://drive.proton.me/urls/0GMHY4JSW0#Dl8iFRnVYyNX). This form is mandatory, and letters without it may not be accepted. The form must be filled out in English either by hand or electronically.
• Specify the recipient’s full name.
• Use the following address: AZ1009, Baku, Parliament Avenue 14, To the Head of the Investigative Detention Facility of the State Security Service of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
